King Charles V of France had the family manor house in Vincennes converted in 1365 to provide more comfortable accommodation. From the 15th to the 19th century, the keep was used as a prison, a symbol of justice dispensed in secret, with notable inmates including Fouquet, the Marquis de Sade and Mirabeau among others.
The Sainte-Chapelle (holy chapel) which was started in 1379 greets visitors with its remarkable decor, bringing to life Charles V’s dream of adding an outstanding religious building to this fortress.
